We are there in the trenches, there as a plane comes crash-landing towards the screen; there right behind Schofield as German soldiers give terrifying chase in the bombed-out husk of a French town.The cinematography is indeed often dizzying – the way the camera vaults over dug-outs, glides over swamps and dashes along with its protagonists is wondrous. But in 1917, the camera never cuts away from the action.The film – directed by Sam Mendes and inspired by his grandfather’s memories of the war – is presented as a single, frantic shot. So It was a deep injustice for these men to be thrown into warfare – but we who now have the benefit of hindsight should take a critical look, rather than leaping in amid the havoc.With only that one, long shot, we lose a sense of the scale of the war, a consideration of both sides, and an intimacy with these men whose lives were torn from them.All rights reserved. As opposed to close-ups, which are focused on the actors’ heads, low three-quarter shots have enough room in the frame to include the background and enough of the setting to do the same job as an establishing shot.The sequence before the plane crash is almost completely in low three-quarters, following the characters as they look out on the field and up to the sky. Series of long takes stitched together in imperceptible ways.
